By now you’ve almost certainly heard of the disgusting ad that MoveOn (link intentionally omitted) placed in the New York Times questioning the character of General Petraeus, our top military commander in Iraq. Few, if any, of the Democratic Presidential contenders have condemned the ad, choosing to dance around the issue.
However, the Senate voted 72-25 on Thursday to condemn the ad. The ad galvanized Republicans — some of whom have been wavering on supporting Bush’s war strategy — into a cohesive force, allowing them to regain some lost ground. According to the Associated Press:
The ad became a life raft for the Republican party as the war debate kicked into high gear. With several Republicans opposed to President Bush’s war strategy, GOP members were able to put aside their differences and rally around their disapproval of the ad.
Sen. Gordon Smith, one of the few Republican senators who supports legislation ordering troop withdrawals, told reporters Thursday he thought Petraeus’ testimony and the MoveOn.org ad were the two biggest factors in keeping Republicans from breaking ranks with the president: Petraeus’ testimony because it was persuasive and the MoveOn add because it went too far by attacking a popular uniformed officer.
“It was stupid on their part and disgraceful,” said Smith, R-Ore.
Stupid and disgraceful, indeed. The anti-war crowd wantonly committing treason on a daily basis in this country doesn’t realize what they’re condemning us to if our efforts in Iraq fail. I simply cannot understand why some of the individuals and groups involved are not arrested, tried for treason, and executed upon being found guilty. There’s most certainly a place for dissent over most issues that come before the American people, but to commit treason against one’s country by taking those issues to the extreme like MoveOn and other far-left web sites are doing is beyond the pale.
Regarding the Democrat Presidential hopefuls, how did they vote? Like they were wetting their pants for MoveOn:
The resolution condemning the ad was sponsored by conservative Republican John Cornyn of Texas. Voting against it were Democratic presidential hopefuls Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Christopher Dodd of Connecticut.
Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, another contender for the Democratic nomination, did not vote, although he voted minutes earlier for an alternative resolution by Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.
In a separate story, AP reports top Presidential hopefuls Clinton’s and Obama’s responses:
In an interview with The Associated Press Tuesday, Clinton declined to address the ad, saying instead: “I have been an admirer of General Petraeus for a number of years. I have said that on numerous occasions. I reiterated it, and I think my words speak for themselves.” [So does your vote, Senator — TD]
Obama, who appeared in Atlanta with R&B artist Usher and former NBA forward Dominique Wilkins, defended his decision not to vote, calling the resolution the “kind of game-playing that the American people are tired of.”
He said it was wrong to waste time “debating about a newspaper ad” when young men and women are dying in Iraq and veterans are not receiving needed services. [Since you couldn’t find the moral courage required to condemn the ad placed by those whom you dare not offend lest they turn and attack you, what makes you think you’re qualified to lead this country? — TD]
Just for the record, the “Statement of Purpose” for the Resolution reads as follows:
To express the sense of the Senate that General David H. Petraeus, Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq, deserves the full support of the Senate and strongly condemn personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Forces.
