GOP Chair Says Baxley Admits Her Campaign Is Based On Polling, Not Principles
Birmingham - Alabama Republican Party Chair Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh on Tuesday said that Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley, in some recent careless comments, admitted that her campaign for governor is one based upon polling, not principles.
In finally taking a position on a small handful of issues last week, Baxley told the Birmingham News that she supported a proposed hike in the minimum wage because it polled well among citizens.
According to the August 17, 2006 edition of the newspaper, Baxley said:
“This is the only humane, fair thing to do for the working people of the state of Alabama,” said Baxley, who hopes to unseat Republican Gov. Bob Riley in the Nov. 7 general election. “This is favored by a large, large percentage of the people. We did polling on this. And the people really believe that $5.15 is just unconscionable.”
Cavanaugh said Baxley’s comments beg the question “if polling had shown that the ‘humane, fair thing to do’ was unpopular with the public, would she have made the proposal?”
“It appears as if Lucy Baxley is taking the Bill and Hillary Clinton tactic of holding your finger in the wind and letting the polls tell you what to say, think and do,” Cavanaugh said. “Judging by this obvious slip of her lip, Lucy Baxley’s campaign has about as much backbone as a jellyfish.”
“During natural disasters, times of crisis and when critical decisions have to be made, Lucy Baxley won’t have time to take a poll on what to do,” Cavanaugh said.
The GOP chair said candidates outside the mainstream often let polling decide which issues they should publicly discuss and rarely deviate from them. Cavanaugh said that might explain why Baxley has taken so few public positions on issues important to Alabamians.
“People often ask what Lucy Baxley stands for and why she hasn’t taken strong public positions on issues important to Alabamians during her time in office,” Cavanaugh said. “By her own admission, it is obvious Lucy was waiting for the polls to tell her what positions to take, and, even then, she stills refuses to tell us where she stands on cutting taxes for the middle class, improving education and creating jobs.
