Now that the thought of giving amnesty to the millions of illegal aliens in this country has been flushed down the toilet as it should have been, perhaps we can give some thought to “OK, now what?” The issues as I see them are:
- A porous southern border - Whatever it takes, secure that border. Build a 50,000 volt electrified fence, place land mines, have the military guard it, pay bounty hunters for every live illegal they bring in, do something to stem the tide.
- What to do with those already here illegally - Identify those here illegally as much as possible, and ship ‘em home. Don’t incarcerate them, that’s just another form of welfare for those who shouldn’t be getting any public assistance.
- Birthright citizenship - There are already rumblings in various media outlets and amongst our elected representatives about this. Denying citizenship to those born of illegal parents should be addressed legislatively while Republicans still control both houses, and the issue should get an up-or-down vote.
With regard to securing our southern border, why the Legislative and Executive branches refuse to do this is more than I can comprehend. Why do our elected officials seem to be more afraid of the illegal immigrants than they do of the taxpaying, American voter? This makes no sense to me, even when you consider that many employers want these workers freely available. Surely they don’t outnumber those of us who want to know who comes into our country, do they?
One argument I’ve heard too much this week is that rounding up the illegals would be an impossible task. To that, I refer the reader to my previous post this week on the subject, in which I mentioned the beginnings of a solution picked up by none other than Ann Coulter on The O’Reilly Factor last night: start with the rallies they’ve been having lately, you’ll find a whole bunch of ‘em there!
Also, why has no one questioned the drain in law enforcement resources that these rallies cause? Police men and women busy providing security for a rally consisting of illegal immigrants are taken away from other crime-fighting tasks, aren’t they? Are cities across America being reimbursed by the organizers for their wages? I don’t think so! In fact, if you want to make good use of law enforcement, check out this story in the New York Times:
While lawmakers in Washington debate whether to forgive illegal immigrants their trespasses, a small but increasing number of local and state law enforcement officials are taking it upon themselves to pursue deportation cases against people who are here illegally.
In more than a dozen jurisdictions, officials have invoked a little-used 1996 federal law to seek special federal training in immigration enforcement for their officers.
In other places, the local authorities are flagging some illegal immigrants who are caught up in the criminal justice system, sometimes for minor offenses, and are alerting immigration officials to their illegal status so that they can be deported.
Are we going to get them all like this? No, but it’s a start. As someone once said, “Just because I can’t do everything doesn’t mean that I shoudn’t do something.” Why should we do this? Why should we gain control of our borders and stop the flood of illegals?
Well, the first reason I can think of is that if we don’t, we’ll soon be having problems with Hispanics the way that France had problems with Muslims a few months back. It’s getting that way now: an illegal immigrant community that refuses to assimilate is now demanding — demanding! — certain rights. These people are not coming here for the idea of American, their allegiance is still to whatever third-rate, third-world, tinpot country in Latin America they came from. They’re here because they see America as the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Once the pot empties, then what?
Secondly, despite Teddy “C’mon, I know a nice romantic bridge we can drive over” Kennedy’s assurances over our culture in the mid-1960s, the ill-conceived legislation which he sponsored at that time has resulted in a cultural shift in America. While many apply and wait years to come to America through the legal process, people who would contribute in major ways to our society, who would have taxable wages, contributions to the culture, and who would buy into the idea of America (thus becoming culturally assimilated), those coming here illegally subvert this process, tax our economy and resources, and don’t even properly appreciate what they’re receiving!
It’s way past time for talking, it’s time for American citizens to stand up for their own rights, insist on secure borders and a stemming of the southern invasion. It’s time to deport those not here illegally. As Gil Favor used to say on the old “Rawhide” TV series, “Head ‘em up, move ‘em out!”
