One of my pet peeves is stupidity. It doesn’t matter what someone is being stupid at, I just simply don’t like stupid! I’m not talking about ignorance (which I define as “not knowing” — we’re all guilty of that on some subjects, to some degree). I’m talking about stupid — incomprehensible statements or actions by one or more people who simply should know better.
And right now I’m having a really difficult time determining if Barbara Boxer is Ignorant or Stupid.
The Washington Times (registration required) reports that a group of female Democrat Senators, Boxer among them, have said that:
…they will vote against Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. unless he vows to uphold abortion rights.
While the Times insists that “They also come closer than ever to establishing a single-issue “litmus test” for his confirmation”, this is simply not true. They did establish a single-issue “litmus test” for the confirmation of judges. What person in their right mind would believe that any future judge has a snowball’s chance in H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks of being confirmed given the current make-up of the Senate, the female Senators’ position, and a prospective justice’s firm stance against abortion?
Then, speaking of the days before Roe v. Wade (pre-1973), Barbara Boxer wins TD’s Stupid Award of the Week with this pronouncement:
“Thousands of women a year died in back alleys.”
Says who? Planned Parenthood for one (first paragraph), but hold the phone!
Since I have a personal “thing” against stupidity, I work really hard not to be. Stupid, that is. So when I don’t know what the heck I’m talking about, I’ll actually (get this, libs!) look it up!
I went to Just Facts (www.justfacts.com) and accessed their article on abortion. In addition to and regarding the Planned Parenthood link cited above, it gave the following information:
No source is cited for this information. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, whose death statistics from legal abortions are used by Planned Parenthood, in the year before Roe vs. Wade (1972), there were 39 deaths from illegal abortions. In the year after Roe vs. Wade (1974), there were 26 deaths from legal abortions.
What’s the point? The point is that these 39 deaths per year don’t come even remotely close to the “thousands of women a year [who] died in back alleys” claimed by Senator Boxer.
So which is it? Is she ignorant, stupid, or both?
